Lake Maharlu is a salt lake located 27 kilometres southeast of Shiraz. The Lake is at an altitude of about 1460 m, has an estimated average area of 220 sq km, a maximum depth variously cited as 0.5 and 3 m, a salinity of 124‰ or 304.95 gl-1 and is fishless. The Lake is the winter habitat for many Northern birds. The water body is an exclusive home only for the crustacen 'Artemia', and the unicellular algae Dunaliella. The original Artemia species was nearly completely replaced by Artemia fransiscana, introduced by the provincial Fisheries department.
